A Theory About Theories

D.J. Stroud (Letters, Nov. 18), wrote, regarding the theory of evolution, “. . . readers have a right to expect articles to be truthful.” And, he said, “There is no scientific evidence to prove the theory of evolution.” And “truth . . . includes identifying (a) theory as such. …”

Isn’t it funny — I have the same reaction to his statements.

As to his first claim (no evidence), a lot of evidence that proves the theory of evolution can be found on the Web site www.talkorigins.org/faqs/comdesc/.

One piece of evidence: Whales are mammals, not fish. And modern whales have hips and vestigial hind legs. In the last 20 years paleontologists have found and identified (at least) three animals that show how the transition occurred from terrestrial to marine creatures. You can read about it at www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/ Hangar/2437/ambulo.htm.

Stroud’s second claim (paraphrased as: evolution is just a theory) shows a lack of understanding of the scientific use of the word “theory.” Is there any doubt about the theory of gravity? Or the theory of Relativity? Or the Heliocentric theory — that the planets revolve around the sun? Or are those accepted as fact?
