The recent completion of the 40,350 square foot, two-story office building in Salem, Oregon, for State Farm Insurance, exceeded expectations with the assistance of design/build steel contractor R.F. Stearns. Stearns was approached for their extensive experience of structural systems, and to convert a conventional wood structure to one utilizing steel.
Stearns, in collaboration with Devco Engineering, designed the foundations, steel frame floor and roof system, and the entire exterior skin support. Stearns' in-house staff provided the management and coordination of structural steel components, and the deck and metal stairs. The building is framed with long-span open-web joists, providing an open space-plan. Stearns resorted to their strong industry relationships to expedite the long-lead items for fast and accurate performance.
Acknowledging Stearns' design/build contributions to the project, Alex Cheyne, Project Manager of Devco Engineering stated, "The knowledge and skill of Stearns' staff is invaluable in putting together a project like this in a short amount of time. Using their knowledge of steel construction, and market conditions, we were able to quickly evaluate design options for cost effectiveness. In addition, upon their suggestion, several unique design elements were incorporated in this structure."
Jim Sarka, Project Manager of R.F. Stearns, pointed out the other areas where the firm's professional experience enhanced the project. "The re-entrant corners of the building, and long-span joists, were a challenge for design and construction. In order to maintain the integrity of the appealing architectural design, we used pass-through girders throughout the building to achieve the same look. Further, we were able to reduce both budgetary risk and shorten the schedule by taking full advantage of our value-engineering capabilities."
