ALANARKSHIRE vegetable-growing company has won the top award at one of the country's major "green" awards.

Albert Bartlett and Sons, of Airdrie, was named Large Company of the Year at the Vision in Business for the Environment of Scotland (Vibes) Awards.

The competition rewards the efforts of Scotland's most environmentally efficient and competitive businesses.

The family-run firm, which grows root vegetables, was honoured at a ceremony at Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall after beating off competition from 12 other businesses. It is Britain's largest grower of root vegetables, supplying 500,000 tonnes of produce a year.

Colin Campbell, production and HR manager, said: "We're delighted to have won this award. I'm happy for the whole management team as this shows how committed they are to achieving high standards."

Other local firms also made it to the finals.

In the small and medium size categories, Allseasons in Ayrshire and C-BETA, a Castlemilk charity promoting environmentally friendly behaviour at home and at work, were commended for their operations.

Scottish Environment Protection Agency chairman Sir Ken Collins said: "Increasingly, people want to deal with and buy from firms that are environmentally responsible.

"It means concern for the environment is enshrined in the company's culture and plays an important part in all decision- making processes.

"All three of the companies we are honouring are dedicated to environmental best practice."

David Hunter, of sponsors Allied Distillers, said: "The awards are positive recognition of those Scottish businesses that have benefited from reducing their environmental burden and have taken the opportunity to share their achievements."

Paul McFarlane, general manager of co-sponsors RollsRoyce Inchinnan, said: "Each of the firms represented at these awards is making a major contribution to the future prosperity and environmental wellbeing of Scotland."

By winning the Vibes awards, the national winners can enter the European Environmental Awards in 2007.
