Rescuers give up search for missing miner at north China colliery

SHIJIAZHUANG, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Search-and-rescue operations have ended for the miner who went missing after a coal mine gas blast in Hebei Province on Nov. 30, an official said Wednesday.

Rescuers decided Wednesday morning there was no chance for the miner to survive seven days after the fatal accident which left five miners dead.

Investigators told Xinhua that the carbon monoxide density remains high in the pit, and collapsed shafts and tunnels have made it impossible for rescuers to go on operations.

The blast went off at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 30 when six miners were doing maintenance work down the shaft.

The mine, designed to produce 60,000 tons a year, was not licensed.
