FPL Receives 2005 Green Power Leadership Award: Company is Recognized By EPA and DOE for Its Leading Sunshine Energy(R) Program

Posted on: Thursday, 8 December 2005, 12:00 CST

Florida Power & Light (FPL) has received a 2005 Green Power Leadership award for its innovative Sunshine Energy(R) Program. The annual awards, sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DOE), recognize leading national green power purchasers and suppliers for their commitment and contribution to developing new renewable energy sources. Additional information regarding 2005 Green Power Leadership Award winners is available at http://www.epa.gov/greenpower/

"We're delighted to see utilities demonstrating leadership in renewable energy markets with innovative marketing and dedicated green power program development," said Douglas L. Faulkner, acting assistant secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy.

As the largest green power program in the southeast, Sunshine Energy educates consumers on how they can help preserve the environment for future generations through an integrated marketing campaign consisting of direct mailings, bill inserts, telemarketing and direct sales. Sunshine Energy allows customers to voluntarily support electricity from cleaner, renewable sources including bioenergy, wind and small amounts of solar. Green power purchases support the development of new renewable energy generation and make the construction of new solar projects in Florida a reality.

"We are honored to receive this prestigious award from the EPA and DOE for our Sunshine Energy program," said Marlene Santos, FPL vice president of Customer Service. "FPL is committed to supporting cleaner technologies and developing the green power market."

About Sunshine Energy(R)

Sunshine Energy is a voluntary green power program offered as a choice for FPL residential customers who want to support renewable electric generation and reduce the demand for electricity generated from traditional fuel sources. FPL's Sunshine Energy program was ranked No.10 in the nation by the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for customer participation in the first year. The program reached a milestone of more than 22,000 participants who have voluntarily signed up for Sunshine Energy during the first 18 months. FPL launched Sunshine Energy in February 2004.

FPL does not profit from the Sunshine Energy program in any way. An important component of the program is developing new solar facilities. The company has pledged to construct additional solar power for customer participation in the program, making the construction of new solar projects in Florida a reality.
