A new report by Global Witness speaks of an upsurge in illegal diamond mining and logging by Liberian ex-combatants. The group said the act is undermining international efforts to promote good governance and stability in the war-torn country.
Global Witness warned that the government and its international donors have failed to demobilize thousands of ex-fighters. The group said these ex-fighters are finding jobs in the illegal mining and logging industry.
Global Witness also accused the Liberian government and UNMIL of failing to exert their control over natural resource extraction. The group also said they are yet to control the country's borders despite the export of diamonds in violation of UN sanctions.
The timber and diamond industries are crucial to the prospects for peace in Liberia.
