Private Contractor That Runs Savannah River Site Updates Its Name

By Josh Gelinas, The Augusta Chronicle, Ga.

Dec. 9--AIKEN, S.C. -- The private contractor that runs Savannah River Site has changed its name from Westinghouse Savannah River Co. to Washington Savannah River Co., officials announced Thursday.

The change was made to more accurately reflect what company is actually running the nuclear reservation, according to a letter sent to employees.

The Westinghouse engineering company took over Savannah River Site in 1989, but its government services division responsible for the contract was purchased by Washington Group International Inc. and BNFL in 1999, according to a press release about the name change.

Earlier this year, Washington Group, which already owned 60 percent of the Westinghouse Government Services businesses, purchased the remaining portion of the company from BNFL, according to Washington Group.

"First and foremost, the name Washington is a more accurate, up-to-date reflection of who we are today," states the employee letter from Bob Pedde, the president of Washington Savannah River Co., and Pres Rahe, the president of Washington Group's Energy & Environment division.

"This change should make it that much easier to explain our identity," the letter further states.

Washington Group, which has corporate offices in Aiken, employs approximately 25,000 people in 30 countries.

Washington Savannah River Co. employs about 9,700 people.

The company is contracted to run Savannah River Site through most of 2006 and has said it will bid to continue its stewardship.

"While this isn't the right forum to discuss the specific pursuit of future contracts, you can be certain the company -- as the Washington Savannah River Co. -- will be very active in working to retain our SRS business," Mr. Pedde and Mr. Rahe wrote in their letter.
