Turkmenistan, Russia fail to reach agreement on natural gas price
ALMA ATA, Dec.12 (Xinhua) -- Turkmenistan and Russia's Gazprom natural gas company have failed to reach any agreement on the price of gas during the latest round of talks, according to reports from Turkmen capital Ashgabat.
Turkmenistan has raised the prices for its natural gas from 44 US dollars to 60 dollars per 1,000 cubic meters beginning next year, but Gazprom has been reluctant to accept the new price, the Neutral Turkmenistan daily said in a report.
But Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov and Gazprom chief executive Alexei Miller agreed Sunday to continue talks later this month, the newspaper said.
The report said Russia was expected to buy about seven billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas in 2006.
Turkmenistan is the second-biggest gas producer, after Russia, in the former Soviet Union, and it currently supplies Russia, Ukraine and Iran.
Niayzov warned last month that if Russia and Ukraine refuse to pay more for Turkmen natural gas, the Central Asian nation will turn to other markets.
