Gazprom May Stop Gas Deliveries to Ukraine If No Contract is Signed

MOSCOW. Dec 13 (Interfax) - Gazprom may stop gas shipments to Ukrainian consumers on January 1, 2006, if a gas delivery contract is not signed with Ukraine, the Russian gas giant's spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov told Ekho Moskvy radio on Tuesday.
If such a contract is not concluded, Russian gas deliveries to Ukraine will be reduced to the amount of gas consumed by that country, he said.
Gazprom is ready for litigation in international courts if Ukraine begins using Russian gas without permission, Kupriyanov said. "We have excellent lawyers," he said.
Gazprom is able to monitor the volume of gas intended for European consumers that enters and exists Ukrainian territory, he said.
Monday's round of bilateral negotiations on gas issues was fruitless, the spokesman said.
