MOSCOW. Dec 16 (Interfax) - An accident at the Ecomet-S factory, which is located nearby the Leningrad nuclear power plant, has not prompted an increase in radiation levels at the plant's territory, said the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry.
"The radiation situation at the Leningrad nuclear power plant's territory and in the town of Sosnovy Bor in the Leningrad region remains unchanged at background levels," the ministry said in a press release on Friday.
A metal splash at a furnace occurred during a melting process at Ecomet-S early on December 15. The incident injured three workers and is being investigated in line with prescribed procedures, the ministry said.
Ecomet-S is situated within the industrial area in Sosnovy Bor about one and a half kilometers from the Leningrad nuclear power plant. It is an autonomous enterprise having no relation to the power plant's operation.
"Therefore, the industrial and technological processes at Ecomet- S have no relation to power generation at the Leningrad nuclear power plant or safe operation of the plant's power units," the press service said.
