G44million Christmas Waste Bill

IRELAND will create a 95,000-tonne waste mountain this Christmas which could cost us EUR44million to dump if we don't recycle, it was claimed yesterday.
A study by recycling group Repak, which launched a Green Christmas campaign with local authorities, showed Irish people create around 30 per cent more waste over the festive period.
Beer bottles, wrapping paper and tin cans are the main items dumped.
Repak chief executive Andrew Hetherington claimed clearing up could add an extra EUR34 to household budgets if people do not recycle.
He said: "This addition to our waste bill could unexpectedly hit all our pockets as it's the first Christmas since pay-by-weight and pay-by-use was introduced.
"If you want to save money and help do your bit for the environment, ensure you recycle as much of your used packaging as you can this Christmas."
An estimated 420,000 Christmas trees will add to the waste mountain but some can be recycled.
Environment Minister Dick Roche added people can also cut down on rubbish by reusing wrapping paper, composting fruit and vegetable and recycling bottles and cans.
Repak will set up 90 recycling centres around the country.
