Census figures show slight gain in states population

New figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate Louisianas population grew by 0.4 percent in the 12 months ending in July, but continued to lose people to other states.

Of course, Hurricane Katrina, which is expected to result in a loss of a half-a-million people by the time the demographics stabilize next year, changes the picture entirely.

But the figures released Wednesday show Louisiana had 4,523,628 people in July 2005, up 16,943 people from 4,506,685 in July 2004. Louisiana held onto its ranking as the 24th-largest state, though it ranked 40th in the percentage increase of its population.

The figures show 12,849 people left the state during that 12- month period, continuing Louisianas out-migration trend. Births offset deaths, accounting for much of the net increase in population.

LSU economist Loren Scott said that by some time next year, he estimates the state will find itself down about 515,000 people, or about 11 percent, and stands to lose a congressional seat.
