Dec. 24--HESPERIA -- Sheriff's deputies put a fledgling methamphetamine lab out of business Thursday, officials said. After serving a search warrant at a house, deputies found a lab that was being used to extract ephedrine -- a primary ingredient in methamphetamine. A digital scale and materials used to package drugs were also found, said Detective Sgt. Ross Tarangle. "There was more than enough here to justify manufacturing, sales, stuff like that," said Detective Dave Burgess of the Hesperia sheriff's station. A loaded gun was also found in the home, Deputy Sal Alcala said.
Four children ages 1 to 14 were found inside the home in the 10300 block of Cottonwood Avenue, Alcala said. The children may be turned over to Child Protective Services, sheriff's officials said. Officials arrested Jose Montufar, 30, of Hesperia, for possessing a small amount of methamphetamine, said Alcala. Three other adults were also being detained, though their names were not released, Burgess said. One of the adults tried to run out the back door when police entered the house, he said. Burgess managed to chase down the adult and pull him off a fence before he got away. Some of the adults detained may have been on drugs, detectives said. A sheriff's narcotics team was called to examine the chemicals and drug-making equipment, Tarangle said.
