Dec. 25--Yuba City will debut its red light cameras this week, but violators won't get any tickets during the first month of operation, the Police Department announced Saturday.

On Tuesday, the automated cameras will begin snapping pictures of people running the traffic signal at the intersection of Gray Avenue and Bridge Street.

During the 30-day grace period, drivers will receive warnings in the mail. Police won't begin issuing citations until Jan. 26.

“Our goal is to make Yuba City's streets and intersections the safest in California," Lt. John Buckland said in a news release. “Drivers need to take notice red light running is unacceptable."

This is the first of four planned camera installations in Yuba City. The other three intersections set to receive cameras - Highway 99 and Bridge Street, Highway 20 and Clark Avenue and Highway 20 and Civic Center Boulevard - need approval from the California Department of Transportation.
