Vietnam’s farm product exports planned for 2006

HANOI, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) — Vietnam has targeted concrete volumes of rice, rubber, coffee, cashew nuts and pepper to be exported next year, according to local newspaper Vietnam Economic Times on Monday.

The country plans to sell overseas 4.5 million tons of rice, 780,000 tons of coffee, 570,000 tons of rubber, 110,000 tons of cashew nuts, and 105,000 tons of pepper, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said, noting that it can reap 330 million US dollars and nearly 1.9 billion US dollars from exporting fruits and vegetables, and forestry products, respectively in 2006.

To this end, Vietnam will focus on trade promotion, especially in China and the European Union, improving products’ quality, and building more trademarks.

Vietnam exported nearly 5 million tons of rice, 801,000 tons of coffee, 504,000 tons of rubber, 100,000 tons of pepper, and 94,000 tons of cashew nuts in the first 11 months of this year, according to the country’s General Statistics Office.

In 2005, the country is estimated to ship abroad 5.2 million tons of rice worth nearly 1.4 billion US dollars, 564,000 tons of rubber worth 772 million US dollars, and 880,000 tons of coffee worth 718 million US dollars.

Meanwhile, it is forecast to earn 481 million dollars, 146 million dollars and 235 million dollars from exporting cashew nuts, pepper, and fruits and vegetables, respectively.
