Pet Food Shipped to R.I. May Contain Toxic Chemical

Posted on: Tuesday, 27 December 2005, 18:00 CST

A Missouri pet-food manufacturer is warning consumers that its products may have been contaminated by a toxic chemical.

Diamond Pet Food discovered aflatoxin, described as "a naturally occurring toxic chemical byproduct from the growth of the fungus Aspergillus flavus on corn and other crops," in a product manufactured at the company's Gaston, S.C. facility. That plant produces pet food for sale in Rhode Island and 21 other states, the company said in a news release Tuesday.

The products produced at the Gaston facility include more than 20 kinds of cat and dog food.

The company has not recalled the food, but is recommending that distributors hold the sale of all products produced with corn at the Gaston facility in a three-month period leading up to Dec. 10, when a corn shipment tested definitively clear of aflatoxin. The company is still analyzing samples to determine which specific lot numbers are contaminated.

The company lists all the affected products and will offer regular updates on the aflatoxin testing on its Web site, www.diamondpet.com.

Symptoms of illness from aflatoxin include lethargy, loss of appetite, a yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, and severe or bloody diarrhea. The company instructed owners of animals displaying those symptoms to consult a veterinarian immediately.
