Natural-Gas Project Planned

Dec. 28--Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corp. is planning a $121 million project, mostly in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, to increase the amount of natural gas it can supply to the Northeast.

An application filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission by Williams Companies Inc. of Tulsa, Okla., a Transcontinental subsidiary, says work could start early in 2007 and be completed late that year.

The project, for which the company estimates it will need between 500 and 700 skilled laborers, involves adding 10 miles of 42-inch pipe, replacing two miles of 42-inch pipe and constructing a compressor station in Middlesex County, N.J.

The capacity of the pipeline would be increased by 100 million cubic feet of natural gas a day. Williams said that is enough to serve about 440,000 homes.

The impetus for the project is an anticipated need for more natural gas by KeySpan Corp., a major energy supplier in the New York City area, Williams spokesman Chris Stockton said.

Transcontinental-operated pipelines into the Northeast from the Leidy storage area in northwestern Clinton County already are at capacity during the winter, Stockton said.

The company anticipates natural-gas consumption in the Northeast will increase by nearly 8 percent by 2009, he noted.

Work planned in Pennsylvania includes pipelines in the Hughesville area of Lycoming County and Berwick in Luzerne County, plus modifications to a regulator station in Northampton County.

The natural gas Williams stores in the Leidy field comes from the Gulf Coast region. Transcontinental pipelines in the area hit by Hurricane Katrina did not suffer significant damage, Stockton said.
