Ukraine entitled to take 15 percent of Russian gas shipments to Europe: PM
KIEV, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine's Prime Minister yuri Yekhanurov said on Tuesday that his country is entitled to take 15 percent of Russian gas shipments to Europe that pass through its territory as a transit fee.
Ukrainian companies "have the legal right to take 150 cubic meters of gas from every 1,000 as a transit fee," the prime minister said in a statement released by his office.
Yekhanurov said this is allowed under a contract with Russian natural gas giant Gazprom.
However, Gazprom said on Sunday that it may take Ukraine to an international court if the former Soviet republic uses gas intended for European clients from a pipeline running through its territory without permission.
Ukraine and Russia have recently been locked in a bitter row as Russia seeks to more than quadruple the price it charges Ukraine for natural gas.
Ukraine has been buying Russian gas at a discounted price of 50 U.S. dollars per 1,000 cubic meters, and the country has said it is willing to switch to market prices for Russian gas but insisted it needs a transitional period to adjust its economy.
