Wetland bird species in Bangladesh on extinction: study

DHAKA, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) — The number of species of waterfowls in Bangladesh’s wetland has come down to 70 from more than 250 in early 1990s, a study conducted by birdwatchers has revealed.

Environmental pollution and offensive activities of people such as killing of birds and spoiling their eggs and dwelling places are major reasons for this decline, Sajahan Sorder, president of Bangladesh Birdwatchers’ Society, was quoted by local newspaper The Daily Star on Friday as saying.

Sajahan emphasized ‘wetland management’ to conserve birds, especially the waterfowls.

He called on immediate measures to be taken to control trapping, killing and selling of water fowls and stressed the need for protection, monitoring and raising public awareness to conserve wetland birds and their habitats.

Of the 70 species of waterfowls found, 30 are resident and 40 migratory species.
