Discovery of deeper oil deposit in Brazil promotes new exploration model

RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- A Brazilian oil firm, PETROBRAS, announced on Thursday that it had discovered a new oil deposit, the finding of which has opened a new frontier in the exploration of deeper geological layers.

"This finding promotes a new exploration model which could be utilized in the discovery of lighter and better-quality oil," read the PETROBRAS statement.

The company said that the Campos basin's average depth of 3,000 meters left the possibility that there are two superimposed petroleum structures, something that had already been foreseen by its experts.

According to PETROBRAS, the new deposit, which is located in the Campos basin off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, lies deeper than those currently exploited and contains better-quality petroleum.

The drilling was carried out at a location where the sea has a depth of 1,350 meters, approximately 120 km off the coast. Experts discovered a 300-meter-deep deposit of 28 API-degree crude oil, which is lighter than that of the Marlim Leste deposit.
