Dec. 30--First, folks were awarded for playing in the sand.
Now, snow.
Paducah had its first sand sculpture contest during the summer, so now city parks promoters want to see what people can do with snow.
"This is easier because we don't have to bring it in like the sand," said Laurie Blount, community recreation supervisor for Paducah Parks Services. "We just hope it snows at some point in the next six weeks. And they can do it where they live. If they get cold, they can go inside and then go back out later to finish it."
The snow sculpture contest runs from Sunday through Feb. 12. Families can create sculptures from fresh snow that falls during that time period and enter the sculpture in the contest.
"They can send a picture or call us and we'll take a picture," Blount said. "It can be in the front yard or back yard, just as long as we can get to it easily."
While Blount expects most people to make snowmen, she's hoping for some creativity. "We would like to see them make something cool like a truck or a dog, or anything they would like to create."
Photographs must be accompanied by the name of the sculpture, family name and contact information. The photos should be submitted by 5 p.m. Feb. 13 to the parks department at 1400 H.C. Mathis Drive.
Prizes will be awarded to the top five snow sculptures. Blount said the prizes haven't been finalized, but might include a trophy. "They say it will snow, but we'll see," she said. "If it doesn't snow by the deadline, we might extend it. It's the first year so we're playing it by ear. Hopefully this won't be our last one."
