Midland: Hippodrome Aims to Reduce Its Energy Bills By Pounds 17,500 a Year

A Birmingham theatre will reduce its energy bills by pounds 17,500 a year after transforming its heating and ventilation systems.
The Hippodrome (right) was spending pounds 35,000 in energy bills but hopes to reduce that by about a half after receiving a grant from the Carbon Trust to curb energy use.
The theatre spent pounds 60,000 on the measures, which include implementing variable speed drives to heating fans.
It is believed the loan will pay for itself in less than four years as a result of energy savings.
The Carbon Trust is urging other businesses to take advantage of its interest free loans for energy efficiency measures.
With soaring energy prices and a colder-than-average winter predicted, the organisation said businesses should consider implementing low and no-cost measures to reduce the chances of being faced with sky-high heating bills this winter.
Dr Garry Felgate, director of delivery and external relations at the Carbon Trust, said: "This winter is set to be the coldest in years and with energy prices continuing to rise Birmingham businesses can help reduce the impact. By checking insulation around windows, turning off air conditioning fans not in use and installing timers on heaters, a business can cut energy bills by up to a third."
Heating and hot water can account for up to 60 per cent of a building's energy costs but small measures can make a significant difference.
The Carbon Trust has recently included a heating starter pack in its publication library at www. thecarbontrust.co.uk/ene-rgy. The guide offers free advice on how businesses and public sector organisations can cut energy bills.
