Jan. 2--A night of drinking on New Year's Eve apparently ended in a fight that left an Akron man dead and his girlfriend charged with murder.
Andre Duncan, 39, died Sunday after he was struck with a butcher knife several times about 10:45 p.m. Saturday during a quarrel at their home in the 1700 block of Nanaula Drive, Akron police Lt. Rick Edwards said.
Akron police charged Duncan's girlfriend, Kathye Mathis, 47, with murder.
"Apparently, they were out drinking," Edwards said. "They got home, got into a verbal argument where he apparently slapped her, and she grabbed a butcher knife and stabbed him several times. The fatal one was to the chest."
Police received a call about the incident from an anonymous caller on a cellular phone at 10:48 p.m. Saturday.
Duncan was taken by ambulance to Akron City Hospital, where he underwent surgery and died at 12:17 a.m. Sunday, according to the Summit County medical examiner's office.
Mathis was being held without bond Sunday night in the Summit County Jail. She is to appear in court on Tuesday.
An autopsy will be performed today.
The couple have no prior history of domestic violence calls at the home, according to Akron police.
But Mathis has faced other run-ins with the law.
In 1992, she pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault, according to Summit County Common Pleas Court records.
Her six-month prison sentence initially was suspended but was reinstated three years later when she failed to comply with the terms of her probation, according to court records.
