Polish Gas Supplies Affected By Russian's Cutting to Ukraine

Polish gas supplies affected by Russian's cutting to Ukraine

WARSAW, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- Poland's natural gas supply has been affected by Russia's move to halt gas deliveries to Ukraine, Poland's state-run gas monopoly PGNiG said on Sunday.

"Today at 11:00 am (1000 GMT), PGNiG was informed by the National Gas Directorate of a fall in pressure at the connection point at the Polish-Ukrainian border at Drozdowicze," PGNiG said in a statement.

"This indicates a fall in supplies originating in Ukraine and is a consequence of the decision by Russia's Gazprom to restrict deliveries of Russian gas to Ukraine," the statement said.

The gas restrictions imposed by Russia on Ukraine would affect 14 percent of Poland's total volume of natural gas, the statement pointed out.

Russia began to halt gas sales to its neighbor on Sunday after Kiev rejected its final offer on gas deliveries in 2006.

The gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine raised concerns in European Union states, including Poland, which depends heavily on Russian energy supplies, that their gas supplies from Russia will be affected since most of them go through pipelines that cross Ukraine.

Polish Economy Minister Piotr Wozniak warned of a supply risk to his country on Friday though Gazprom has pledged that supplies to European customers won't be affected.

"The harmful potential effects of a fall in deliveries risk being felt in Poland from the first days of January," Wozniak said.
