Food Labels to List Ingredients Linked to Allergy Attacks

Jan. 3--Beginning this year, the Food and Drug Administration is requiring that food labels clearly state if products contain the eight major allergenic foods -- milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat or soybeans -- or proteins that come from them.

For example, if a product contains casein, a milk-derived protein, the label will have to use the term "milk" in addition to the term "casein."

Approximately 30,000 Americans require emergency room treatment and 150 die each year because of allergic reactions to food.

The FDA also recently began allowing whole grain barley and barley-containing products to claim they reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, the cause of almost 500,000 deaths in the United States each year.
