New Food Review: Easy-to-Swallow Additive Targets Aging Population

Productscan Online has reported some particularly interesting products this month that have one thing in common; teeth. A new food additive in Japan has been designed for the elderly to make food easier to chew and digest by turning it to a jelly consistency. In the US, meanwhile, a new tooth brush-shaped candy is targeting the younger consumer. Dentists may not approve!
With Japan's population rapidly aging, manufacturers have been launching some innovative new products geared toward this demographic. One of the latest of these is Kissei Through Partner Food Additive, launched by Kissei Pharmaceutical. The product is designed to be mixed with any type of food, turning it into a jelly consistency and therefore making it more digestible. It is uncolored and non-flavored, and when mixed with food, retains the taste and color of the original food.
Turning towards products for children, Hong-Kong-based confectionery company Candy Manufacturer Inc. has released in the US a candy in the shape of a tooth brush. The Electro Candy Brush has a battery operated, plastic toothbrush base, to which a variety of flavored candy tooth brush heads can be attached. Dentists across the nation may be in despair to learn that children are being encouraged to use a candy toothbrush, when so much of their time is spent encouraging them to eat more tooth friendly foods.
Perhaps a less controversial product is Ice-Mastry's Inne Ice Balls. These are little balls of flavored ice presented in a tube, recently released in Poland. The ice balls are a novel alternative to ice cream, and are likely to have a lower fat content too.
Over in Canada, those who enjoy cooking may be interested in the Lactantia Cream Cheese Brick which has been launched by Lactantia, an affiliate of Parmalat. The "brick" package makes this well suited for recipes, especially cheesecake - the manufacturer has included a cheesecake recipe in the pack.
Meanwhile, pomegranate appears to be flavor of the month, featuring on a number of items reported by Productscan. This includes the Chicken Pomegranate Sausage from Jody Maroni's Sausage Kingdom. This uniquely flavored sausage contains pomegranate molasses & fresh basil which are said to complement the smoked chicken filling. The sausage is presented ready cooked and is recommended to be served with rice, pasta, omelets and sandwiches.
Another unusual ingredient has been added to a bread product in Finland. The Primula Artesaani Ciabatta - Chili Ananas is a ciabatta bread containing chili and pineapple, and should help to add some exotic spice to conventional dishes.
