Berlin: The federal government supports the opting out of nuclear energy, which was negotiated by the previous government. On Wednesday [4 January], deputy government spokesman Thomas Steg stressed that the coalition agreement is valid. Steg emphasized that the agreement points to the different positions of the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union and the Social Democratic Party of Germany and, therefore, states that the regulations on opting out of nuclear energy are to remain in effect. "Nothing has changed about that," the spokesman said.
Steg stated it is "not likely" that the issue will play a major role or will be discussed at all at the closed meeting of the cabinet in Genshagen. Issues of energy policy will rather be the subject of the energy summit, which may "perhaps" take place in March, according to Steg.
The federal government is interested in a "balanced mix of domestic and imported energy sources" as well as in high supply security, Steg said. Supply companies and consumer associations are also to attend the energy summit. [Passage omitted]
