India to Have Asia's Largest Solar Power Plant By Year-End - President

Hyderabad,StartDateStartDate 5 January: Asia's largest solar power plant will be set up in India by the end of this year, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said Thursday [5 January].

The establishment of solar power plants was one of the key components of the mission to achieve an integrated and sustainable rural development in the country, Kalam said at the Indian Science Congress here.

"At present, only kilowatt-level solar power plants are available in the country," the president said.

He asked the scientists to take up the challenge of increasing the solar cell efficiency from the present 15 per cent to 45 per cent.

The president also said a youth satellite will soon be launched by India to provide a communication medium for the youth of the world, and the government has approved the design and development of the satellite to be launched in collaboration with.

The satellite will be built by Indian universities in association with the Indian Space Research Organization. It can be used by the youth to promote peace in the world," Kalam said while interacting with children at the congress.

He said some research experiments can be suggested by the students community. "The students assembled here can think of various projects which they would like to do using the youth satellite".

The services of the satellite could also be made available to other countries in due course, he added.
