Australia's federal opposition has urged protesters to tone down their aggression against Japanese whaling ships in the Southern Ocean. Japan's fisheries agency says it may ask for police protection for its fleet after a collision between the Sea Shepherd protest ship and one of its boats yesterday. The whalers have also accused Greenpeace of ramming another of its ships, a claim which is denied by the group. Labor's Robert McClelland says he sympathizes with the anti-whaling cause, but he believes aggression on the part of protesters may be counter-productive.
[McClelland] It would be desirable for these issues, at least from the point of view of the immediate protest activity, to be resolved by negotiation and not taking action - that is, Greenpeace not taking action which is prejudicial to the broader and longer- term cause of preventing whaling.
