Only gasohol 95 to be sold in 2007 in Thailand

BANGKOK, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Energy Ministry of Thailand has announced that it could meet its target of abolishing the sale of 95- octane petrol by the beginning of next year, and 95-octane gasohol, a new type of mixed fuel, will emerge in the market by then, Thai newspaper the Nation reported on Tuesday.

Energy Minister Viset Choopiban said that of the seven factories that have won licenses to produce ethanol, at least six would begin production this year in the first phase of the ministry's plan to abolish 95-octane petrol.

Once the factories are up and running, there should be a sufficient supply of ethanol to produce 95-octane gasohol, which would replace 95-octane petrol. Gasohol contains 90 percent petrol and 10 percent ethanol, which is made from plant matter.

The six plants have a combined production capacity of 700,000 liters per day at that time and the total demand for ethanol now is only 300,000 liters a day, said the report.

A government biofuel panel will meet on Jan. 13 to follow up on the progress of 24 ethanol plants which have been awarded licenses.
