Sulfuric acids removed from sunken ship, two still missing

YANGZHONG, Jiangsu, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The sulfuric acids on a sunken cargo ship in the Yangtze River, China's longest, have been transported safely to a chemical plant though two people are still missing, rescuers said Thursday.

The sulfuric acids were pumped from the ship, which was salvaged and dragged to the water area 500 meters away from the accident site in Yangzhong of east China's Jiangsu Province, into two chemical cargo ships at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The two ships then sent the acids to a nearby chemical plant, while the sunken one was dragged to a repair shop.

Rescuers said that the accident did not cause water pollution and the daily life of residents nearby was not affected.

The ship, with 465 tons of sulfuric acids, set off from Zhangjiagang City of Jiangsu Province on Saturday afternoon and capsized in the early morning on Sunday near the second water supply plant of the city of Yangzhong. Three people were on board when the ship sank but only one was rescued.
