Jan. 11--A 21-year-old Paducah man has been accused of shaking his three-month-old son, David, who remains at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville with brain hemorrhaging, police say.
David L. Hamilton IV of North 8th Street was charged early Tuesday morning with second-degree criminal abuse. He remained at the McCracken County Regional Jail on Tuesday and is expected to be arraigned today.
The child's mother, Rebecca Fairless, 20, also of North 8th Street, has not been charged in connection with her son's injuries. But she was arrested on an outstanding warrant charging her with theft by deception for writing bad checks, according to Paducah police spokeswoman Robin Newberry. Fairless was held at the jail briefly before posting a $100 bond.
Fairless denied she was involved in injuring David Hamilton V, who was born Oct. 28. He was taken to Western Baptist Hospital on Sunday after losing consciousness, Newberry said. Hamilton called 911 from the house in the presence of Fairless, she said.
The baby stayed briefly at Western Baptist before transfer by air to Kosair's, Newberry said. Hamilton and Fairless drove to Louisville to be with the baby.
Detective Nathan Young said Tuesday the father admitted in Louisville and again in Paducah to shaking the baby sometime either late Saturday or early Sunday. He also admitted that he had become upset prior to shaking the baby, Newberry said.
Kosair officials reported the baby's injuries to a state Cabinet for Families and Children social worker assigned to the hospital. She notified a social worker in Paducah who called Paducah police on Monday, Newberry said.
By noon Monday, Young and Detective Brian Laird were on their way to Louisville to interview Hamilton and Fairless. Detectives drove Fairless back to Paducah on the outstanding theft by deception warrant.
Hamilton followed the detectives back to Paducah with the intention of posting bond for Fairless. He was charged after an interview at the police department in which he admitted he became upset and shook the baby, police say.
