Pacific Gas and Electric Company Says California Solar Initiative Will Further the Utility's Goals for Renewable Energy and Continuing the Nation's Best Solar Program

Posted on: Thursday, 12 January 2006, 18:00 CST

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Pacific Gas and Electric Company welcomed the adoption of the "California Solar Initiative" by the California Public Utilities Commission today with the following statement:

"Pacific Gas and Electric Company offers several programs that provide support and solar energy options to customers and is proud to have the largest distributed solar program in the United States. The California Solar Initiative is a bold step forward and the financial incentives will help California meet its energy needs with the goal of developing a solar industry that is self-supporting and economically sustainable.

"The California Solar Initiative greatly expands upon another existing program -- PG&E's Self-Generation Incentive Program -- that offers financial incentives to help customers offset much of the cost to install their solar electric systems. PG&E has paid customers more than $120 million in financial incentives for more than 230 solar projects, totaling 29 megawatts. In addition, PG&E rates also fund rebates paid by the California Energy Commission for solar generation systems.

"PG&E also offers interconnection services and has interconnected more than 9,800 solar electric systems of customers to the PG&E grid. In 2004, PG&E interconnected more than half of the new solar electric systems installed in the nation during that year. This track record of success positions us well to take on the task of keeping California a world leader in clean, renewable energy.

"PG&E also created its Solar Schools Program in 2004, which has installed 30 solar generation systems at underserved schools throughout northern and central California, with 30 more projects to be installed this year. This program also provides solar curricula and teacher training. This program is funded entirely by company shareholders. PG&E offers a variety of other solar incentives and programs as well."
