Tree Tops Park Plans $1.95 Million in Improvements

Jan. 13--A variety of improvements are coming to Tree Tops Park this year, including better amenities for those who use the main building for special occasions.

The county last month approved a $1.95 million plan for upgrades at Tree Tops, 3900 SW 100th Ave. in Davie, and Sunview Park, 1500 SW 42nd Ave. in Fort Lauderdale.

Among the most prominent upgrades at Tree Tops will be renovating the changing rooms for those who use the assembly hall, which is inside the main park office building. The hall is used most Saturdays and some Sundays for activities such as weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs or family reunions, park manager Meryl Wishnoff said.

The county also plans to build a standalone restroom and a pavilion near the office for those who stop there as they ride along the equestrian trail, said Jaime Plana, Broward's Parks and Recreation Division superintendent of planning and design.

"We want it so you don't have people coming off of horses and people preparing for a wedding in the same place," he said. "Mud and wedding dresses don't mix."

This will be the first extensive upgrade to the 356-acre park since it opened in 1983. The park, which is the site for many of the county's nature programs in southwest Broward, has picnic shelters, grills, a fishing and paddleboat area and horse and pony corrals.

The county plans to redesign and landscape the park's entryway and add a playground, Plana said. It will convert the park to a sewarage system from a system that uses septic tanks, which are not good for the environment, he said.

The money comes from the $400 million Safe Parks and Land Preservation Bond that Broward voters approved in 2000.

At Sunview Park, the most prominent renovation will be of the ball fields, Plana said. The fences and dugout area will be remodeled and the field regraded.

The work at both parks is expected to be completed by the end of the year, Plana said.
