Red-Light Cameras Still Six Weeks Away: Officials Discussing Which Intersections Will Get Devices First

Posted on: Saturday, 14 January 2006, 15:00 CST

By Jodi Andes, The Columbus Dispatch, Ohio

Jan. 14--Columbus police had hoped cameras already would be catching red-light runners at city intersections, but it could be Feb. 28 before the first shutter clicks.

Negotiations with the camera vendor, Redflex, lasted into mid-December, said George Speaks, deputy safety director.

"The devil is always in the details of the contract," he said, "and it took time to iron out those details to ensure the most efficient use of taxpayers' dollars."

Installing the cameras takes about 60 days, said Sean Mentel, an attorney for Redflex. The first five should be in place by Feb. 28, he said. The City Council approved buying the cameras in October.

City officials picked 15 intersections to place cameras and were determining this week which five intersections will be the first, Speaks said.

One of the 15, at I-70 and Hamilton Road, will not get cameras because of engineering problems, Speaks said. The cameras could be moved to one of the 14 other intersections or to one yet to be selected.

"We're looking at our options," Speaks said.

Motorists will have a 30-day grace period once the cameras are in place, when warnings will be mailed to vehicle owners instead of tickets, said Columbus Police Officer Roger Foor, who has been working on the project.

Signs also will be posted roughly 100 feet before the light, warning motorists that a camera is ahead, Foor said.

In the meantime, the Ohio legislature has taken no new action on House Bill 56, which would make cameras untenable by requiring that an officer be present when they were operating. The bill, which has passed the House, remains in the Senate's Highways and Transportation Committee.
