Romanian president orders coal mine closure after explosion
BUCHAREST, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Romanian president Traian Basescu on Sunday ordered the closure of a 200-year-old coal mine, one day after a deadly blast occurred there.
The explosion occurred on Saturday in the southwestern city of Anina, killing seven miners and injuring five others.
"We are closing the mine ... we will seek solutions for Anina," Basescu told a group of government officials, reporters and relatives of the dead.
At more than 1,000 meters below the surface, the Anina coal employing 544 miners, is one of the deepest mines in Europe.
Local police said the explosion was due to an accumulation of methane gas in the shaft of the mine, which produces some 1, 000 tons of coal every day, the biggest in west Romania.
An investigation is underway into the causes of the accident.
