Jan. 17--United Parcel Service gave the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County $80,500 on Monday, which the charity will use to buy equipment for its three fields in Orange County as well as bins to transport fruits and vegetables from sister food banks.
Fruits and vegetables grown on the plots help feed Orange County's 35,000 homeless and thousands more of its poor. Second Harvest distributes a combined 300,000 pounds of food per year from three fields: the "Incredible Edible Park" in Irvine; Waterworks, also in Irvine; and the Field of Greens in Santa Ana, adjacent to the Santa Ana (I-5) Freeway on land provided by The Orange County Register.
Alleviating hunger is one of UPS' principal charitable focuses, said Rosemary Turner, UPS vice president of the Southern California District.
Turner, Congressman Ed Royce, R-Fullerton, and about 300 UPS drivers ready to depart on their routes attended the presentation at the company's Anaheim hub.
Separately, the American Farm Bureau Federation chose the Field of Greens as one of 15 projects nationally honored at its recent annual convention.
The Field of Greens had been an empty lot, but the Register, which owns the land, invited Second Harvest to use the plot to grow food. Volunteers from the Orange County Farm Bureau prepared and planted the crops.
