Sharp Electronics Corporation congratulates the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) on the approval of the California Solar Initiative (CSI), the largest solar energy program ever initiated in the United States. The goal of the CSI is to install 3,000 megawatts of solar power on California homes, businesses, farms, schools and public facilities over eleven years, solidifying California's position as the world's third largest solar market behind Japan and Germany.
Sharp Electronics is the U.S. subsidiary of Sharp Corporation, Osaka, Japan, the world's leading producer of solar energy cells. "We congratulate the CPUC on this historic achievement, which is a first step toward a more affordable clean energy supply. Over the past three months more than 50,000 people have written to the CPUC outlining their support for the initiative, clearly showing that the CSI enacts the will of the people of California," said Ron Kenedi, vice president of Sharp's Solar Energy Solutions Group. "This decision reinforces California as a leader in the worldwide solar market by providing the power equivalent of six natural gas-fired plants, while reducing costs for our already-congested electric grid."
Sharp is the world's number-one manufacturer of solar cells and powers more than 100,000 residential and industrial installations around the world. Sharp has been the U.S. market leader since 2000 and recently introduced low-profile solar roof modules that lay flat on the rooftop for enhanced aesthetics and superb performance. At its solar assembly operations in Memphis, Tennessee Sharp assembles 162-, 167-, 170-, 175-, 185- and 208-watt solar panels for residential and commercial installations.
