Novovoronezh (Voronezh Region), 18 January: One of the two power generators of Unit No 5 with a capacity of 1m KW at the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant was stopped today, the head of the unit, Viktor Boldyrev, has told an ITAR-TASS correspondent.
According to him, the stopping of the generator, which has halved the unit capacity, "was caused by a fault in the automatic system which is supposed to maintain the water level in the steam generator".
Viktor Boldyrev said that the steam generator fault had not affected the work of the unit and the reactor. Teams of experts are working to fix the fault.
In addition to Unit No 5, there are two more units whose total capacity so far stands at about 1.3m KW. "The radioactive situation at the station and in surrounding areas is normal," he said.
[A separate ITAR-TASS report at 1009 gmt said the incident took place at 0750 gmt.]
