Jan. 19--Sunflower Community Action is beginning a petition drive to have video cameras installed in Wichita police cars.
Sunflower leaders will hold a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. today at the Church of the Living God, 2725 N. Hillside.
Wichita police officials have estimated the cost at $600,000 to install video cameras in the department's 175 cars. City Council member Carl Brewer has placed the estimate closer to $1 million.
Brewer said Wednesday that a federal grant could help the city fund the effort.
If not, budget constraints might put the issue on the back burner.
J.J. Selmon, organizer with Sunflower's northeast chapter, said the benefits of improving the department's accountability justify the costs.
The group hopes to get 6,000 signatures on its petition.
Selmon said Sunflower plans to present the petition to the City Council as early as March.
