AEP's Cook Nuclear Plant Sets Second Consecutive Generation Record

BRIDGMAN, Mich., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Electric Power's Cook Nuclear Plant set site records for generation and capacity factor in 2005.
The 1,036-megawatt Unit 1 and 1,107-megawatt Unit 2 generated 17,471 gigawatthours of electricity and operated at a capacity factor of 96.84 percent. The 2005 record eclipses the previous site best of 92.68 percent capacity factor and 16,770 gigawatthours net generation, which was accomplished in 2004.
"Back-to-back generation records can only be set when the entire organization is focused on nuclear safety, quality work, and the performance of efficient refueling outages that result in reliable plant equipment," said Mano K. Nazar, senior vice president and chief nuclear officer. "The Cook team has a lot to be proud of, but our goal is nothing less than to be the best plant in the industry, and we'll continue to work hard to reach that goal."
The two Cook generating units can produce enough electricity to power more than 1.5 million average homes.
A third consecutive year of record performance in 2006 will not be possible because both Cook units are scheduled for refueling outages with major project installations during the year.
American Electric Power owns more than 36,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States and is the nation's largest electricity generator. AEP is also one of the largest electric utilities in the United States, with more than 5 million customers linked to AEP's 11-state electricity transmission and distribution grid. The company is based in Columbus, Ohio.
