Occidental Chemical Subsidiary Buys Plant Site on Tideflats

Posted on: Friday, 20 January 2006, 00:00 CST

By Kelly Kearsley, The News Tribune, Tacoma, Wash.

Jan. 19--Pioneer Companies Inc. has sold its chemical plant site on Tacoma's Tideflats to Mariana Properties, an affiliate of the Occidental Chemical Corp.

The property, on Alexander Avenue in the Port of Tacoma, had been used as a terminal and chlor-alkali manufacturing facility.

But increased power costs and a decline in demand caused the company to stop manufacturing chlor-alkali, used in papermaking, at the site in 2002.

Occidental Chemical could not be reached for comment. Pioneer also owns and operates a bleach production and chlorine repackaging facility on the Tideflats.
