More animals, plants in Vietnam threatened

HANOI, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) — The numbers of threatened fauna and flora species in Vietnam listed in the country’s Red Book 2004 are 407 and 450, respectively, while the figures in the Red Book 1992 were 359 and 350.

Vietnamese scientists have found that since 1992 two fauna species, namely the two-horned rhino and the trunk pig, have become extinct in Vietnam, and four others — the spotted deer, otter civet, original carp and lilac crocodile — have gone extinct in the country’s natural environment, according to local newspaper Saigon Liberation on Thursday.

No flora species have become extinct in Vietnam, but some are endangered. The number of endangered plants have rose to 192 now from 24 in 1996, said the newspaper.
