Taiwan shares close up 0.21 percent -- Jan. 19
HONG KONG, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan shares rose 0.21 percent with a thinner traded volume on Thursday, according to reports reaching here from Taipei.
The weighted index, the key barometer of Taiwan Stock Exchange, rose 13.37 points to close at 6,512.29.
The bourse opened at 6,514.71 and fluctuated between 6,545.89 and 6,442.78 during trading.
A total of 3.89 billion shares were transacted on a market turnover of 116.32 billion new Taiwan dollars (3.63 billion U.S. dollars), down from Wednesday's turnover of 133.23 billion new Taiwan dollars (4.14 billion U.S. dollars).
Six of the eight major stock categories gained ground, with construction issues moving up the most at 1.1 percent, followed by foodstuff issues at 0.8 percent, textile stocks at 0.6 percent, plastics and chemicals shares and machinery and electronics shares both at 0.2 percent, and cement stocks at 0.1 percent.
One of the eight major stock categories lost ground, with paper and pulp issues moving down at 0.3 percent.
Banking and financial shares remained unchanged.
Gainers outnumbered losers 538 to 536, with 166 stocks remaining unchanged.
