Croatian gas import from Russia drops by over 11 percent

BELGRADE, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Croatia's gas import from Russia dropped by 11.36 percent on Thursday due to the severe cold snap which is playing havoc with Europe's major exporter of the fuel, said reports reaching here from Zagreb.

The gas import from Russia has dropped from the usual 131,000 cubic meters per hour to some 116,000 cubic meters, the Croatian news agency HINA reported.

However, the shortfall has not affected the stable gas supply, said the reports, adding that gas consumption in Croatia is in balance with gas import, domestic gas production and gas supplies at the underground gas storage area.

Gas consumption in Croatia has varied in recent days from 460, 000 to 500,000 cubic meters per hour.

On Wednesday, Russia's natural gas monopoly Gazprom reduced supplies to European customers by around 20 percent to cope with the increased domestic demand in the face of the cold snap which has gripped the west of the country for the past four days.
