DEP Wants More Time to Review Pine Tree Landfill Application

Jan. 21--HAMPDEN -- Town councilors were informed on Thursday that the state Department of Environmental Protection wants more time to review an application from Pine Tree Landfill.

The DEP was scheduled to issue a decision on the landfill's public benefit application later this month, but has determined it now needs through Feb. 28 to conduct a complete review, according to a DEP letter to the landfill, copies of which were provided to councilors.

The department requested that Casella Waste Systems Inc., which owns the landfill, provide additional information for review.

Requested were a breakdown of the types and origin of waste accepted at the landfill, and the amount of construction and demolition debris that will be diverted from the landfill to feed Georgia-Pacific's biomass boiler in Old Town.

Casella will provide the requested information and is in the process of drafting a letter to the DEP, Don Meagher, manager of planning and development for Casella, said Friday.

"We will be telling them in the letter that we agree to that extension," he said.

In other business Thursday, councilors:

. Awarded a $376,000 contract to Sargent & Sargent Construction of Hampden for sewer renovations and pump station upgrades;

. Authorized Public Works Director Greg Nash to move forward with design plans for sewer pipe replacement on Route 1A;

. Authorized Recreation Director Kurt Mathies to get bids for a planned project at Lura E. Hoit Memorial Pool, which includes reconstructing the parking lot and building a skating and volleyball area;

. Reviewed a resignation letter from Garry Gilpatrick for his seat on the Water District board of trustees.
