Police Search for Vehicle Theft Suspects: Two Men in Stolen Truck Fled on Foot

Jan. 25--Authorities searched central Pierce County with dogs for more than seven hours Tuesday morning in pursuit of two men suspected of stealing a truck and two ATVs in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Neil Gulbranson, chief deputy of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, said a deputy pulled over the two men on U.S. 63 south of Ellsworth about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. The deputy stopped the vehicle because he thought it odd that the truck, still bearing decals from a Minnesotan John Deere dealership, would be driving through the area at that time.

As soon as the truck stopped, two men jumped from the passenger side of the vehicle and ran into the surrounding farmland.

The department learned that the truck had been stolen from a John Deere dealership in Plainview, Minn., and that two ATVs and a trailer were taken from a dealership in Durand.

A tracking dog from Pierce County and a dog from Wabasha County, the southeast Minnesota county where the truck was stolen, were used to follow the men's trail for about two miles.

The search included 10 law enforcement agents from Pierce and Wabasha counties and the Ellsworth and River Falls police departments and lasted until 10 a.m.

"We still have cars in the area, but we're pretty sure they might have got out of the area on us," Gulbranson said Tuesday afternoon.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call 911 or the Pierce County Sheriff's Department at 715-273-5051.
