Clean diesel, hydrogen alternative fuels for future cars: Experts

SINGAPORE, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Lower carbon dioxide emission will make clean diesel and hydrogen the alternative car fuels in the next 20 to 30 years, experts said Wednesday at a forum on fuel efficient cars organized by Singapore's Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.

A diesel car equipped with particle filter consumes 30 percent less fuels and reduces carbon dioxide emission by 20 percent to 25 percent as compared with a gasoline car, according to Andreas Bodemer, Director of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Sales of Robert Bosch, a renowned German automotive technology products manufacturer.

Bodemer expected the production of diesel vehicles to increase to account for 31 percent of total vehicle production worldwide by 2015.

Leon Halliburton, Fuels Product Manager of Eastern Region of Shell International, regarded hydrogen produced from renewable sources as an alternative solution for the long term because it is carbon-free and generates no green house gas emission.

He said that though combustion engines remain the dominant form of propulsion for the next 20 to 30 years, there will be a wider range of vehicle technologies and fuel types to address the economic, social and environmental challenges of increased mobility.
