Vedanta Resources approved plans to develop a $2.1-billion greenfield aluminum project in Orissa, India. The Jharsuguda project would include a 500-kt/a (550,000-stpy) aluminum smelter and a 1,215- MW thermal power plant. Construction is to begin in June 2006 and be completed by the end of 2010. It will be done in two 250-kt (275,000- st) phases.

Vedanta Resources is also building a 1-Mt/a to 1.4-Mt/a (1.!- million to 1.5-million stpy) refinery at Orissa. It is scheduled to be completed in early 2007. It will supply the alumina feed to the new smelter.

Vedanta Resources is India's third largest aluminum producer. Its output is about 135 kt/a (149,000 stpy). About 100 kt/a (110,000 stpy) of that comes from the company's Bharat Aluminium Co. in central India. The remaining 35 kt/a (38,500 stpy) is produced at Madras Aluminium in southern India.
