January 31, 2006
MOSCOW. Jan 31 (Interfax) – Power unit No. 1 of the Smolensk nuclear power plant is operating again after flaws discovered on January 27 were removed, the press center of Rosenergoatom has announced.
No limits were exceeded nor were safety rules violated, the press release says.
“Background radiation levels at the Smolensk power plant and surrounding territory are normal and do not exceed natural background levels,” the release says.
The power unit shut down automatically on January 25 following trouble in the cooling system.
The station has three power units with a combined capacity of 3,000 megawatts.
Rosenergoatom operates all ten Russian nuclear power stations.
